About Me

Background

I am a Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor (LCPC) in the state of Illinois. My journey to this field began after earning my Bachelors in Science from Illinois State University. After graduation I traveled and taught abroad in Spain for a year. Upon returning, I pursued my Masters degree in Clinical Psychology from the Institute for the Psychological Sciences in Arlington, VA. In addition to my studies, I also volunteered at a non-profit where first began my work treating eating disorders. I moved back to IL in 2016 where I worked at a residential treatment center. While there, I treated women of all ages with severe eating disorders, trauma, and mood disorders. Seeking to do more preventative work, I then transitioned into a group practice setting in the North Shore area where I served children, families, and adults for over three years. In 2021 Theresa Villalba Counseling, PLLC was founded and I am delighted that I get to work as an individual therapist for emerging adults, adults, and older adults.

Treatment Philosophy

My clinical training during my graduate studies offered a unique perspective of the human person which guides me in my therapetuic work. Marrying sound psychological science with philosophical studies, my training empasized innate human dignity and taught me to see and treat the whole person. With mindful attentiveness and by gently confronting obstacles and threats to emotional health, the clients that I work with are able to experience an increase in personal resilience simultaneous to undergoing the process of deep emotional healing through a collaborative approach to therapy. My use of techniques drawn from an array of professional proclivities creates a safe relationship that nourishes each person's strengths.
